Finding Angelo (The Wine Lover’s Daughter, Book 2) – Picture Journey

Again, I traveled to research the second book in The Wine Lover’s Daughter series, Finding Angelo. This time, the journey in the novel began in Paso Robles, California, the home and vineyard of Sofia and Nicholas Segantino. Sofia and Nicholas traveled to New York City for a late honeymoon. From there, Sofia embarked on an adventurous and dangerous trip to Tuscany and the Piedmont region in Italy in search of her missing great uncle, Angelo, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances twenty years ago.

The goal of my research was again to capture the unique features of the locals and the people, the vineyards of the Central Coast of California, the bustling life of New York City and Staten Island, and the diverse and fascinating countryside of Tuscany and the Piedmont region of Italy.

Dreaming and Research – Central Coast of California

One of my favorite types of research for my novels is traveling to different places where my characters live and work. This time, I spent a few days in one of my favorite spots in California, namely in Cambria at the Cambria Pines Lodge. Since the fictitious Segantino family lives in the wine region of the Central Coast in California, the Paso Robles area was on my itinerary as well. And last but not least, I checked out the California Polytechnic State University or Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. This is the place where Julietta Santucci, a major character in The Wine Lover’s Daughter series, studies architecture and environmental design.

Here are a few pictures of my vacation/research in beautiful San Luis Obispo county.

Cambria Pines Lodge, Cambria


Cambria Pines Lodge is situated on a hill above the town of Cambria and is a charming lodge with beautiful gardens, the perfect place to dream and write.

A couple of miles north of Cambria is a famous elephant seal spot. These amazing animals come here year after year to breed, raise their young, and relax between their long and arduous migrations in the Pacific Ocean. Every season has its own kind of spectacle. In September, the young males are jousting playfully, preparing for the serious and often bloody fights for dominance and their chosen females.

Of course, a visit to the famous wine region around Paso Robles, the imaginary home of the Segantino family, is mandatory!

Next stop is San Luis Obispo, where I took a brief walk through the Cal Poly campus, a well-known technical and agricultural university.

Another important spot that plays a role in my next novel is the Benedictine monastery in San Luis Obispo, but time ran out and I had to postpone this for another visit. There is always a reason to come back to this beautiful area of California.

Look and See

I love to travel, whether to reconnect with my first home (Switzerland) or to explore new areas. When I do research for my novels, which take place in different countries, I often go back to a place to really look at it and see things I didn’t notice when I traveled there as a tourist. It’s a different kind of traveling, you have to slow down and really look at details in order to describe them accurately. Not just looking with your eyes, but using all your senses: observe the colors, light and shadow, smell the scents, listen to the sounds, taste the food. It’s one of the most satisfying experiences of creative writing.

This morning, I went on my usual walk past my favorite pond of my childhood. As a child, I spent hours exploring, watching the ducks and other water birds.

This morning, I was struck by the play of light filtered through the trees.

“Keep it simple!” A no-nonsense approach to the production of quality wines – Caparone Winery in Paso Robles, California

I’m working on two novels that take place on vineyards, the first one on a vineyard in Tuscany and the second one on a vineyard in the Paso Robles region in California, along Hwy 101 about half-way between Los Angeles and the Bay area.
Since I love red wine, particularly Italian red wine, but know little to nothing about the actual process of making wine, I have to do a lot of research. I read books, navigate the internet, and visit tasting rooms and wineries. My friends of course nudge and wink whenever they mention my “research.” They probably think I sit around in tasting rooms or lie half-drunk between wine barrels on some estate.
Well, this is not the case, of course. I actually do serious research, but who says that serious research can’t be enjoyable and entertaining? Anyway, last year I had the opportunity to spend a week in Tuscany together with my relatives and friends in Switzerland. It was a wonderful experience and I wrote about it in a series of earlier blog posts:
This year, I tried to find wineries and vineyards in California. Now, that shouldn’t be too difficult, should it? After all, California is THE wine region of the United States and every since Californian wine won a blind tasting contest in France of all countries, also called “The Judgement of Paris,” the reputation of fine Californian wine has spread all over the world.
Therefore, it shouldn’t have been too difficult to find vineyards where I could watch the process of winemaking and ask questions. Actually, it turned out a little more difficult than I had expected. For one thing, as many vineyards and winemaking outfits as there are—and there are many!—most of the tasting rooms are not necessarily next to the vineyards or wineries. Many of them are full of tourists during the vacation season and you can’t just monopolize the time of the people who pour the wine and ask a lot of questions. Besides, you can’t just walk on someone’s property to look at his or her vines.
After a few unsuccessful sessions in tasting rooms, where I spent some money buying a few bottles of wine but getting little out of it with regard to solid information about winemaking, I approached my research somewhat more intelligently. I honed in on smaller outfits and on vineyards and wineries that produce Italian wines, since this is the kind of background my novels focus on.
And lo and behold, I found a gem of a winery, which was just perfect for what I was looking for: the Caparone Winery on the westside of Paso Robles: www.caparone.com.
It is an artisan winery, tucked away in the hills of Paso Robles, run by a father-son team. I found their address and got a little background from their website, but when I drove up to Paso Robles and searched for it, it took me a while to find it. Used to large banners announcing wine tasting and all kinds of entertainment at other wineries, I nearly missed the Caparone sign. 

I finally spotted a vineyard and a house on top of the hill. I followed the country road up to a large red-brown barn-like building. As I parked and got out of the car, it was very quiet and peaceful. Only the singing of a few birds interrupted the silence. 

There was a small sign on the barn that said “Tasting,” so I opened the door, went inside, and stood smack in the winery itself: fermentation tanks on one side, stacks of barrels four levels high in the middle and the back, and boxes of bottled wine on the other side. 

Somehow, I knew I had found what I was looking for. Here was finally an outfit that looked like a real winery and not just a glitzy tasting room. In fact, there wasn’t a tasting room at all but just a tasting area, a longish table with bottles of Caparone wines and wine glasses lined up neatly in a row. Behind it stood a young man who smiled and asked if I wanted to taste some wine.

Now, I certainly wasn’t going to turn down a taste of wine, particularly since there was no tasting charge. Other wineries usually charge ten dollars for tasting, unless you belong to their wine club. Marc Caparone poured me a glass of Sangiovese, one of my favorite wines, and it was truly delicious. So were the other two varietals of their estate wines I tried, Nebbiolo and Aglianico, both wines I had never had before. They were excellent—interesting, complex, with a lot of character and just the right amount of tannin. I’m not an expert on wines, not by a long shot. But I know what I like and I truly liked those wines. I have ordered several bottles since then.

However, it wasn’t just the wine, it was also the friendly, unassuming, and helpful attitude of the owners that I liked. The first time I met Marc I didn’t have much time to ask too many questions since I was just driving through on my way to the Bay area. But he immediately volunteered all kinds of information and gave me a good overview of the history of the vineyards and winery, of his family’s background, and of how his father, Dave Caparone, had started the winery back in 1979, although he had already been involved in research and winemaking for quite some time before that.

A few months later, I spent a whole week in Paso Robles and went back to the Caparones and it was then that I also met the father, Dave Caparone, who had started the vineyard and the winery. Now in his seventies, the trim, wiry man shows no sign of slowing down. According to his son, he still checks the vines every day, sometimes even at night.

As Marc and Dave told me, they do things a little differently from some of the other wineries in the area. They try to keep the whole process simple. They have thirteen acres of planted vines, which is moderate compared to the other estates. They are not taking part in wine contests, they are not investing millions in advertising. “We don’t like the show-biz approach to winemaking,” Dave Caparone said in his straightforward, no-nonsense demeanor and his son, Marc, agreed.
Instead, they focus all their energy on working the land in a sustainable fashion, planting their vines in the correct microclimate, cultivating the grapes carefully and with love, producing quality and complex wines, and selling them at affordable prices! They do all the work themselves with the exception of picking the grapes at harvest time, when they have a crew of people helping them, and again when it’s time to bottle the wine.
Since the family has been at it for over thirty years, they have a lot of experience, they know what works and what doesn’t, and they have many loyal customers from all over the country without having to spend a lot of money on spreading the word. Their wines speak for themselves and allow them to make a good living.
Both father and son took hours answering my questions, suggesting books, and showing me around. My initial hesitation of taking up too much of their time and asking too many questions began to fade as I began to feel they both truly enjoyed telling me as much as possible about their work.

But Marc and Dave Caparone don’t just produce great wine, they are also excellent musicians. They play jazz and perform publicly. Dave Caparone, the father, has a Masters in Music and plays the trombone, and his son, Marc, plays the cornet and bass. Marc’s wife, Dawn Lambeth, is a very talented singer. In addition to his passion for wine and music, Dave Caparone has a third interest: He loves classic cars and has fixed up a few beauties that even impressed a non-aficionada of cars like me.

Author in training: A critical review that did NOT make me want to rip out my hair

In addition to many positive 5- and 4-star reviews, I also get my share of less enthusiastic and downright negative ones. I read all of them. I rejoice in the glowing ones and have grown a thick skin when reading the negative ones. Here I distinguish between critical and negative. Critical reviewers are those who point out stuff they didn’t like about a book in a professional manner. Negative ones are often just plain hostile. I particularly take issue with reviewers who don’t like a book and for that reason belittle or condemn those who do like it.
The other day, I received a 2-star review of Love of a Stonemason. This was an intelligent albeit critical evaluation. The reviewer stated that this was a book one either liked or disliked and that she unfortunately did not like it. She also mentioned that after reading some of the glowing reviews, she gained a different perspective and appreciated it. In other words, the reviewer respected other readers’ opinions, although she did not share them. I am sorry that she didn’t like the book, but I value her honest and professional assessment of it.

How many times can you read the same book? Do I need a shrink?

I’m a book addict. Seriously. I have the same withdrawal symptoms drug addicts describe: I get depressed, nervous, jittery–you name it–if I don’t have a book to read, either on my bookshelf or on my Kindle. Ever since I got that wonderful reading device, I have been able to feed my addiction and hold the symptoms at bay more easily.
However, there are still times I all of a sudden realize that I AM OUT OF BOOKS, HELP! I just finished reading a book and realize that I have to find a new one. Fortunately, I have a “to be read” list on Goodreads–that’s a really nice feature. If you see a book you like but don’t want to buy it right away, you can put it on that list and access it any time with your computer. Or, my Kindle is in the process of being recharged, or I am somewhere else and don’t have it with me. Or, or, or–it happens. So what do I do?

I REREAD books.

Okay, I know lots of people reread books they really like, so what’s so unusual about it? Well, ahem, I reread books I like many times; we’re talking ten, twenty, thirty times and more. No kidding! That’s how serious my addiction is.

I just put back one of those books I reread I don’t know how many times back on the bookshelf. It’s a novel by Anita Brookner, Hotel Du Lac, a novel that takes place in Geneva, Switzerland. Anita Brookner is one those prolific more traditional British authors who write in different genres. Most of her novels deal with flawed human beings who struggle with love, identity, relationships–the stuff that novels have been made of since time immemorial. But she isn’t the only author whose books I keep rereading.

There are many books on my bookshelves I have gone through many times. Interestingly enough, I reread books on my brick-and-mortar bookshelves more often than those on my Kindle. I don’t know why. It may have to do with the fact that those physical books are more visible. I just grab one off the shelf and voila–the evening is saved.

Why do I reread the same books again and again? Of course, I have to like or love the book in the first place. But still, I mean I know the plot, I know exactly what happens. One reason is perhaps that I read books not just as a reader but also as a writer. Each time I read a book again, I discover something new: an image I hadn’t noticed before, an interesting sentence structure, etc. However, that’s only half the reason. I reread books even before I started to seriously write myself.

The only thing I can explain my book fetish is that fact that when I read, I leave this world and enter into the world the author creates for me. I travel to distant places, I slip into different personalities, I experience life through a different sensibility. I get totally absorbed in the book and this happens every time I read the book.

I guess it could be worse; I could be addicted to a more dangerous substance. The only drawback is the fact that I am also an author and have to write books, not just read them. And right now, I’m struggling with my writing and boy; it’s so much easier to read. So I indulge myself until my author voice hits me over the head and I throw the book away and pick up my writing pad. I struggle through a few pages, feel better, toss my pad and–yes, you guessed it–grab the book again.

Am I the only one afflicted with this “disease,” this book fetish? I hope not!

Author in Training, Part 2: Revising – How much is enough?

I am in the process of translating my novel “Love of a Stonemason” into German. Having been away from the text for several months—I published it independently back in 2010—I look at it with fresh eyes and I’m beginning to see things I haven’t noticed before. When you translate a text, you pay close attention to every word and you notice details that escape you even with careful editing.

I have translated several books by other authors before, not novels but books on topics of Jungian psychology, which had been traditionally published by reputable American and Canadian publishers. I remember catching not just the occasional typos but inconsistencies in content that escaped the scrutiny of the author as well as the editors. Just goes to show: a text is never perfect.

However, that shouldn’t discourage us from trying to make it perfect, and one way to do that is to hire a good editor AND a proofreader. I had my novel edited twice. What I didn’t do is hire a separate proofreader and although my editor caught many of the spelling errors, he didn’t catch all of them and I may have added some as I was making the final revision. A few of my friends read the manuscript before I published it and discovered a few inconsistencies and typos. But even now, after its publication, a fellow author as well as a friend of mine are reading the book and are finding typos and other blunders. Although I cringe and hang my head in shame every time someone discovers a mistake, I am of course very grateful to all these people who contribute to the fact that one day, my novel will be (almost) perfect!

The wonderful thing about ebooks is that you can upload new and improved versions easily. With printed books it is a little more difficult but it can be done as well.

However, as I go through my book again, I also find not just typos but stylistic things that could be improved: two choppy sentences that could be merged into one, sentences which could be eliminated to make the text a little tighter, and so on.

The question I’m asking myself now: Do I leave the book the way it is (with the exception of typos, etc.) and use what I learned in my future novels? Or do I revise further? How much is too much? When becomes the desire to make it better an obsession?
